Jaylen Waddle is officially a Miami Dolphins, well that was fast!
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins began signing their rookie class on Thursday and a day later have inked first-round pick Jaylen Waddle, the team’s number 6 overall.
Miami will likely get their 18th overall pick under contract pretty quickly as well. Jaelan Phillips will slot with the rest of the mid-round picks. In today’s NFL, rookie salary caps make getting players under contract a lot easier than it used to be and have eliminated almost all of the holding out that plagued the league in the past.
Waddle’s contract is a 4-year deal with a 5th-year option. It is being reported that his deal with fall around $16 to $17 million signing bonus.
The deal, according to Adam Schefter is fully guaranteed. It is being reported to be around $27.1 million total.
The signing shouldn’t be much of a surprise as the players are at the Dolphins training facility doing workouts as part of the voluntary work program. They are working on conditioning and other NFL allowable practice.
Waddle is explosive and the Dolphins are hoping that he will another dimension to the team’s offense and another weapon for Tua Tagovailoa.
Miami’s biggest problem may come with third-round pick Hunter Long. Traditionally, the third round has been the hardest players to get under contract as the first-round is really the only one that is slotted with positional value. The Dolphins will have to sign Jevon Holland and Liam Eichenberg as well. Both were taken in the 2nd round. The Dolphins did not draft anyone until round seven after round three. Larnel Coleman and Gerrid Doaks both signed their rookie contracts yesterday.
Miami will continue to have off-season workouts for the next month or so before breaking entirely for the summer sometime in June and then returning in late July for the start of training camp.
