Running back is probably the weakest unit on paper. The Dolphins made an attempt to get better in the draft but were not willing to give up a lot of draft capital to make it happen and thus didn’t draft a running back until round seven.

In free agency, the Dolphins were rumored to be all-in on Aaron Jones but that didn’t happen and Miami added Malcolm Brown. Several running backs remain on the market but at this stage of their career, their names are more impressive than their play on the field.

Todd Gurley and Le’Veon Bell immediately come to mind when you think about veterans that are available. Gurley is 27 and Bell is 29. Bell would be a big “no” for me and it appears that he is more interested in getting paid to play a backup role. Gurley just doesn’t have the pop he used to have.

If the Dolphins were going to add an RB to the roster, Ryquell Armstead may be a better option.

Armstead played well in 2019 for the Jaguars as a rookie and looked like he could be heading in the right direction but in 2020, he contracted COVID-19 and it took a huge toll on him. He missed the entire season as a result, dealing with severe respiratory issues. The Jaguars drafted Travis Etienne in round one this year and have James Robinson held over from last season. Armstead was the odd man out. Still, he has some value and could compete for a roster spot. Is he well-rounded and proven? No, not yet but he has no wear and tear on his legs at this level and could be a gem that needs polishing.
