Miami Dolphins will entertain the thought of Jaylen Waddle returning kicks
By Brian Miller
Jaylen Waddle is electric and the Miami Dolphins have a stellar wide receiver prospect but is playing him on special teams worth it?
When Waddle touches the football, he can be deadly. He is so quick off the catch that he can make defenders miss with his speed alone and his cutting ability doesn’t hurt but now there is talk that Waddle could be used in the return game.
Danny Crossman the Dolphins special teams coordinator spoke with the media on Monday and said that Waddle will have a chance to compete (for return duties). The Dolphins did the same with Preston Williams his rookie season and lost him for the year in the first preseason game.
Is putting Waddle on the field smart? He is after all coming off an ankle injury, that coincidentally happened while he was returning a kickoff. So again, should the Dolphins put him back on a unit that is notorious for injuries?
On the surface, we might think that it doesn’t make sense but we also know that special teams is a big part of football, and field position is important. If waddle can handle the duties should he not be on the field?
The other side of that coin is the injury concern. Miami has other players that could take over that job if Jakeem Grant is no longer in the Dolphins’ long-term plans. Malcolm Perry or Lynn Bowden, Jr. should get reps as well as Noah Igbinoghene but none of those three have that third level of speed.
Crossman does say that they have multiple guys that can handle the job so it is not like Waddle is the only option but still, Miami fans may find themselves holding their breath every time he does return one.
