Brian Flores thinks Tua Tagovailoa comments meant something else
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins head coach, Brian Flores spoke with the media on a Zoom call this morning and shared his thoughts on Tua Tagovailoa’s comments.
Last week, Tua Tagovailoa spoke with the media and was asked about his progression, and from there, it snowballed down a small hill, ran over the top of another hill, continued to get bigger, and then finally smashed face-first into the young QB.
Tagovailoa said, “I didn’t actually know the playbook necessarily really, really good.” Fans and media alike took their shots. Today, Flores addressed what Tua said and it makes sense even if Tua meant exactly the way it was said.
"Honestly, I just think he’s comparing last year to where he is right now, and I get it. I understand that. – Brian Flores via Dolphins released transcripts"
Flores goes on to say that he took it as a contextual thing similar to when he took his first job as a position coach. Flores said he looked back on that first year saying there were things he could have done better.
As it relates to Tua, Flores’ opinion on the matter makes some sense and if Tua was indeed comparing himself this year to last year then naturally, he would realize just how little he actually knew.
That being said, if Chan Gailey was actually adjusting the offense then at least one coach saw he wasn’t where he should be.
Regardless, this is Tua’s year, good or bad. There is no Ryan Fitzpatrick pressing him for playing time and Tua needs to mature as a player. Maybe contemplating what he wasn’t able to do last year will help him realize what he needs to do this year to take the next step in his career.
