Miami Dolphins: Top 10 off-season acquisitions
7. Matt Skura
Another veteran free agent addition is Matt Skura, a center who played for the Ravens for the first four years of his career. He should be listed as the Dolphins’ starting center for Week 1 barring any changes to the roster or position shifting during training camp. Skura along with Jesse Davis will be Miami’s seasoned veterans on the offensive line, so it will be important for them both to set the tone and be leaders for the younger guys.
6. Jevon Holland
One rookie with big shoes to fill is Jevon Holland. The safety out of Oregon was selected by Miami early in the second round, and they apparently feel comfortable enough with the pick to have released veteran Bobby McCain with hopes that Holland can take over part of his role.
He will immediately become one of coach Flores’ favorite players, as made evident by the post-selection phone call in which Flores told the rookie that he is a safety coach at heart. Holland should see plenty of snaps right off the bat, and his presence will be an important one not only for this season, but for the future as well.
5. Jacoby Brissett
Here’s to hoping that the Dolphins will never have to use Jacoby Brissett for any meaningful snaps.
There has been plenty of criticism thrown Tua Tagovailoa’s way, and his safety blanket in Ryan Fitzpatrick is long gone. The second-year quarterback has plenty to prove, including his immediate and long-term health. Brissett provides a solid insurance policy should Tua run in to any issues.
The veteran quarterback has been successful at times as the starter in various situations, and is mobile enough to keep the game plan similar should he have to see any playing time. Using Brissett is obviously a worst case scenario, but he ranks this high on our list given the importance of a good backup quarterback.
