Tua Tagovailoa “loves” running back Jordan Scarlett
By Jeremy Klump
The wild off-season for the Miami Dolphins continues, as starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is in the headlines daily. Tagovailoa’s minicamp performance has been covered hard by the media.
Well, only the day where he threw five interceptions, three of them coming in 7 on 7, and all of this happening while it was raining cats and dogs outside.
The day where Tagovailoa threw six touchdowns and no interceptions must not have been as fun to cover, because again, the media has made Tagovailoa their punching bag this offseason.
Regardless, Tagovailoa keeps getting better each and every day, and he’s been working with one of the best trainers in the nation, Nick Hicks from PER4ORM.
Hicks was on Phinside the NFL with Reason, and I highly recommend you listen to the fantastic interview. Hicks was very open regarding Tagovailoa, and his words got me pumped up for football season.
It wasn’t just Tua Tagovailoa that Hicks spoke highly of.
While the Tua talk will get all the hype, Hicks mentioned another Dolphins player he’s been working with, Dolphins running back Jordan Scarlett.
Scarlett has been training with Hicks since entering his freshman year of high school.
Miami signed Scarlett to a futures contract, and he has seemed to become the forgotten man in the running back room. However, Miami fans shouldn’t forget about him because Hicks told me Scarlett is “in the best shape of his life.”
The former Florida Gators running back was a 5th round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers. After opting out last season due to COVID-19, Scarlett is back and ready to go.
Hicks said, “He [Scarlett] really put the work in this offseason. He put the work in. I told him what time to be there, and he showed up. He has done everything we have asked him to do, and he is killing it. I am so proud of Jordan.” The PER4ORM trainer also added, “Scarlett will do whatever he has to do to make the team and help the team win.”
However, it isn’t just Hicks who is showing Scarlett love. “Tua loves him,” said Hicks. “Tua said Scarlett has done a great job, and he is impressed with his understanding of the playbook and not messing up plays. He knows everything that is going to happen pre-snap. Tua doesn’t have to tell him what to do. There was one play in camp where the quarterback was in shotgun, and Scarlett reminded the quarterback that on this play he is supposed to be under center.”
Scarlett is in the best shape of his life, he will do whatever he needs to do to make the roster, and he has a great understanding of the playbook. I would not forget about Scarlett. I believe he can make an impact in a running back room with so many unknowns.
Miami will likely keep four running backs this season, and I believe Scarlett has a chance to be one of those guys, and Hicks does too. Hicks said, “He is big, he is strong, he is fast, he likes to hit, and he likes contact. He plays special teams if he needs to and will do whatever he needs to do to make the roster. Also, he is in amazing shape, he is fast and strong, but he is also conditioned.”
