Could a Miami Dolphins alternate “orange” helmet be coming soon?

Earlier today, Adam Schefter reported that the NFL has a new helmet rule going into effect in 2022, but the Miami Dolphins won’t benefit.

According to the rule, teams can now use “different” helmets during the course of the season. Currently, teams are allowed one helmet fitted to each player. Teams like the Miami Dolphins who can simply swap out the logo during throwback weekends, don’t have to change the color or “repaint” the shell.

Now, teams can carry two helmets and that brings up the question of whether or not we may see a Miami Dolphins “orange” helmet in 2022 when the rule change takes effect. The Dolphins sell an all-orange mini-helmet in their team shops and it would make some sense to see the Dolphins perhaps go with an all-orange color rush uniform or simply wear their orange alternate uniforms that haven’t been worn in years.

While many fans may turn their nose up to the orange alternates, there are still a lot of fans who bought all-orange jerseys and loved seeing them on the field once a year. From a marketing standpoint, it might be the only way for the Dolphins to take advantage of the new rule.

Ultimately an all-orange helmet may not pass muster with the fan base but so far, the sales of the mini helmet would beg to differ. The fact that they are still on sale at full price and have been for years would lead one to believe that they are something that fans would like to see.

It will be interesting to see what the Dolphins do with this new found freedom and while we could see the Tampa Bay pirate return or the old Patriots logo return, the Dolphins are one of a few teams that could use this to introduce something entirely brand new.
