Miami Dolphins training camp: The 3 players competing at TE
By Brian Miller
Cethan Carter was signed during the off-season and the Dolphins believe that he can become a rotational TE in this offense.
Cethan Carter
- Experience: 3 seasons with the Bengals
- Games: 46 with 5 starts
- Receptions: 7 for 53 yards and one touchdown
Carter has the benefit of experience on his side but his production is far from a showcase of his talent. The Dolphins added him this past off-season as a free agent but they gave him some guaranteed money. If Carter makes the roster he will be paid more than starter Mike Gesicki who is one of the lowest-paid TEs on the Dolphins roster.
Carter could count as much as $2.7 million against the cap this year. Releasing him will save a modest $1.5 million but will still put $1.2 million on the books. Carter could be the guy that unseats Smythe. For now, we have Smythe making the roster but we can’t be 100% certain of that and Carter could be the guy to slide Smythe into this spot instead.
Despite the contract by Carter, there is nothing that is guaranteeing him a job this year. He can block well and catch the football consistently but he wasn’t used as much with the Bengals. He has a high ceiling and could develop quickly this season which will be his fourth in the league.
