Miami Dolphins training camp preview: What to know about Tyler Gauthier
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins will have center Tyler Gauthier in camp this year and for most fans outside of the Miami area, he isn’t all that well known.
When Tyler Gauthier takes the field this year in training camp, he will face stiff competition from Michael Diether and Cameron Tom for a roster spot. Does he have a shot to make the roster? Maybe but it is going to be an uphill climb.
Gauthier is known to the folks in Miami who follow the Hurricanes. He started 29 consecutive games for the University of Miami and was named All-ACC Honorable Mention in 2017. Despite playing for four teams in his short career that included two stints with the Patriots, Gauthier has yet to step onto a football field in the regular season because he has yet to make an NFL roster.
He signed with the Patriots as an undrafted rookie in 2019. While he didn’t get drafted by an NFL team, he was drafted by the St. Louis BattleHawks of the XFL. In December, Gauthier was signed by the Jaguars off the Patriots PS team but his stay in Jacksonville ended in August, 2020.
He signed again with the Patriots after he cleared waivers but was released in September. Miami added him a week after his release and he has been on the team’s practice squad since. On January 5th, 2021, he signed a futures/reserve deal for the upcoming season.
The chances of Gauthier making the final 53 man roster are slim but he could potentially come back to the team’s practice squad this year. He will need to perform well when given a shot, especially during any pre-season games. He will find it hard to get significant reps in practices.
