Robert Hunt

If you’ve read much of my work, you know that I’m extremely high on Robert Hunt. He is one of the most enjoyable players to watch and was much better than most fans realize last year. Austin Jackson was the day one starter, but Hunt was Miami’s best lineman in 2020.

Hunt didn’t get his first start until week 5 in San Francisco, but during Miami’s final eight games of the season he was one of the best right tackles in the NFL. In that time frame, his 98.7% successful block rate was 5th among all right tackles (min of 250 snaps) and his 99.4% successful run block rate was 3rd-just head of Tristan Wirfs. He didn’t get the same level of attention as some of the other rookie tackles, but he outplayed most of them-Tristan Wirfs excluded.

The only place where Hunt struggled at times was in pass protection. He is a power player and his lateral agility isn’t elite. Longer and quicker edge rushers were able to take advantage of that in 2021. Hunt is at his best when he can fire off the ball, get hands on a defender, and impose his will.

His move to guard this year caters perfectly to his skill set and Hunt should succeed even more from the interior. It’s no surprise that he’s already opening up running lanes, that’s something that he figures to do a lot of in 2021.
