#1. D.K. Metcalf

The biggest wide receiver miss for the Dolphins in the 2019 Draft was the overall steal of the night.

D.K. Metcalf was one of the more intriguing stories coming in to the draft. Physically, he was probably the most gifted athlete on the entire board that evening. Every scouting report that was published that winter raved about his size, and there were weight room pictures of his physique that have since made him a gym legend. But Metcalf had his flaws as well. There were serious concerns about his ability to run routes and learn an NFL-level route tree. Some scouts saw his freakish size as something that would impose on his agility.

But despite the question marks, some had pegged Metcalf as a first round talent, and was projected by others to be the first wide out off of the board in 2019.

It didn’t end up that way. Metcalf fell all the way to 64th, the final pick of the second round. He was not the first receiver selected. In fact, he barely made the top-10, with eight pass-catchers being selected ahead of him. But the Seattle Seahawks were the ones who gave Metcalf a chance, and they look pretty smart for it. He has developed in to one of the top wide receivers in the league, putting together a season in which he racked up 1,300+ yards and 7 touchdowns last year on his way to a Pro Bowl appearance.

Anyone, the Miami Dolphins included, would love to have a guy like Metcalf on their team. And it could have been if it wasn’t for an attraction to Josh Rosen. The domino effect on this one would be wild. Maybe DeVante Parker is traded. Perhaps the Dolphins don’t need Jaylen Waddle and trade the 2021 3rd overall pick for an even bigger ransom than what they got. Could you imagine Tua Tagovailoa with Metcalf and Gesicki as his security blankets?

Oh, well.
