The Miami Dolphins have a good defensive core in the secondary and that makes it a little harder to cut players. One player, in particular, could be gone simply because he is being paid too much.

Corners

With Jason McCourty on the roster, the Dolphins have room to keep one less safety on the roster and one extra corner. The Dolphins have a deep roster but this is going to be challenging nonetheless outside of the top names.

  1. Xavien Howard
  2. Byron Jones
  3. Noah Igbinoghene
  4. Nik Needham
  5. Jason McCourty
  6. Jamal Perry
  7. Justin Coleman

Out

  • Trill Williams
  • Tino Ellis
  • Javaris Davis
  • Cre’Von LeBlanc

Safeties

This year’s safeties group should be pretty easy to predict given that Miami typically carries four into the season along with a corner who can moonlight as safety when needed. That shouldn’t change this year.

  1. Eric Rowe
  2. Brandon Jones
  3. Jevon Holland

Out

The fourth spot could easily go to Nate Holley but Jason McCourty is the name to watch here. He is listed as a corner and plays both corner and safety. Clayton Fejedelem’s best offer to the team is special team’s play and he is good at it but he will count $2.4 million cap space and all of that is put back on the books if he doesn’t make the roster. I think this is a toss-up right now but given McCourty’s ability to play both roles, I think Miami carries only three true safeties.

  • Nate Holley
  • Clayton Fejedelem
