I’m going to lead off with some positivity. The defense played hard and they played true to what they were built to do and that is play man to man while bringing pressure. Amazingly, nobody on the defense recorded a sack but as a unit, they harassed Josh Allen for two and a half quarters. They pressed the receivers on the outside, ran cover zero, and brought multiple guys getting Allen off rhythm with his receivers and it worked.
Allen was getting frustrated because the Dolphins were stuffing the running game and Miami was getting Allen in 3rd and long situation through the whole first half. It was nice to see.
Was it because Brian Flores was calling the defense? It sure looked like he was. This is what Miami did last year so often. Bring pressure and man up.
Now that didn’t last the whole game as we saw. Eventually, Allen and the Bills found the matchup they liked and that was Cole Beasely being guarded by Nik Needham or Justin Coleman. They couldn’t handle him. And also, with the defense always coming up short of getting Allen to the ground, he eventually was able to find his playmakers, such as Stefon Diggs, getting free.
The offense doing nothing also hurt the defense but you know that’s how the offense has felt many times this year so I guess turnabout is fair play? I don’t know. It just sucks knowing that the defense can play like this if you just say it screw it and let them do what they were built to do. Next week against the Texans, this is how they should play but will they? We’ve seen too many times where something obviously works and should be repeated only for it not to happen again. Hope I’m wrong.
