Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Vance Joseph

Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Vance Joseph is the only defensive coach on this list and was allegedly one of the candidates for the Miami Dolphins head coaching opening. He helped lead the Cardinals back to the NFL playoffs in 2021 and saw an improved defense from 2020.

He has a history with the Dolphins after being the team’s defensive coordinator in 2016. That was the last season the Dolphins made the playoffs with Adam Gase as head coach. The team went 10-and-6 and lost to the Steelers in the first round of the playoffs.

After the job Joseph had done with that defense in his lone season with the Dolphins, he would then become the head coach of the Denver Broncos. He would only last with the team for two seasons before being fired and then signing on to his current role with the Arizona Cardinals.

Joseph has the head coaching experience and would be gifted a very solid Dolphins defense if he were to return as the head coach. The hires he makes for offensive coordinator and staff would be the most important part of his tenure.

Joseph is likely the only defensive coach left that has a chance at being the Dolphins’ next head coach with the news of Daboll’s hiring. However, it does seem the team wants an offensive-minded coach, but Joseph’s relationship with the Dolphins is something to keep an eye on.
