The Miami Dolphins mock draft with potential options at each pick
By George Keim
Round 4 – The Dolphins have two picks in the fourth round at 119 and 123 overall respectively. This is another round where if things break the right way, the Dolphins could land a player or two that could find themselves playing meaningful downs in year one.
Tyreke Smith – Edge – Ohio State – Many feel that Smith was Ohio State’s best pass rusher over the past two seasons. Smith is in the Jaelen Phillips mold as he will enter the NFL at 6’4” and 265 pounds. Smith has shown the ability to not only rush the passer but also drop into coverage when needed. Smith is an intriguing player who could once again be another rotational piece in Miami’s defense.
Alec Pierce – WR – Cincinnati – If the Dolphins are drafting a receiver in the fourth round, my hope is that it’s because they are doubling down at the position. Pierce is very athletic. Coming out of high school he excelled in football, basketball, volleyball, and track. Pierce is in the Devante Parker mold at 6’3” and 215 lbs. Pierce caught 52 passes for 884 yds and 8 touchdowns for the Bearcats last season. Pierce has been described as an “alpha” on the field and does a solid job blocking in the running game, a must in Mike McDaniel’s offense.
Brandon Smith – LB – Penn State – Another of the “athletic” linebacker type that could easily find a role on Miami’s defense. At 6’3” and 241 lbs Smith has the size to hold up against the run as well as the athletic profile to stay on the field on third downs. Smith was fourth among all linebackers at the combine in the 40 yd dash (4.57), and both the vertical (37 ½ inches) and broad jumps (10’8”). The Dolphins covet chess pieces they can use all over the defense and Smith could be of high value in the fourth round.
