Byron Jones is a great player, but the Miami Dolphins may need to move on in 2023.

The Byron Jones contract situation is an interesting one. The cornerback has restructured his deal during the current off season by converting salary in to a bonus, but the team may need to address the issue again after the coming season.

Jones will again be one of the highest paid players on the team if the Dolphins choose to keep him in to 2023, but the team will have an “out” on the contract if they chose to move on from him. His cap hit will be just shy of $19 million, but his dead cap hit decreases down to $14.8 million, meaning that the team would save over $4 million by moving Jones around this time next year.

It all of course depends on his performance in 2022 as well as the overall performance of the secondary. The unit is top-heavy, but may be lacking depth if injuries happen to befall them. Despite having two top-20 corners in the league on the same defense, the Miami Dolphins would be smart to plan ahead and bring along potential successors. If one of them comes on strongly enough, then Byron Jones may be the odd man out given the size of his contract.
