#1: Byron Jones

Let me start off by saying I really like Byron Jones, he’s a very classy player and the ultimate professional, as well as a solid player.

But the contract the Miami Dolphins gave him back in the 2020 off-season was pretty awful. A 5 year, 82.5 million dollar deal with 54 million guaranteed practically reset the cornerback market at the time, and Byron was entering a situation where he wasn’t even the best cornerback on his own team.

So for starters, Byron was drastically overpaid, and look, I get it, it’s free agency, you have to overpay for players, but to make him more highly paid than Xavien Howard? That was just wrong and ended up hurting X’s ego a little bit and caused contract disputes for the past few seasons.

Jones’ first year with the Dolphins was definitely a huge disappointment, he got hurt early in the season and never really returned to form and it showed throughout the year.

Last year, however, Jones looked a lot better. I still probably wouldn’t call him a top 15 corner, but he’s around that range. A handful of elite corners got new deals this off-season which makes Byron’s contract not look as bad, but he still remains as the 9th highest paid corner in football.

If Jones has another down year in 2022, the Dolphins could move on from the contract next off-season with only 4.2 million in dead cap.

I would like to end this article by saying just because these players may be a bit overrated, doesn’t make them not good players.

I tweeted out about a month ago asking Dolphins fans who they thought was the most overrated player on the team, and these were the most common answers, and I personally couldn’t find any better options who fit the mold.

I’ll be dropping my 3 most underrated players on the Miami Dolphins roster soon, and if you want a chance for your opinion to be featured in an article, tweet me your most underrated players @MathisReports.
