Miami Dolphins Myth #2: Tua Tagovailoa can’t stretch the field

There is a laundry list of things to blame Tua Tagovailoa’s slow development on, though some would call it a collection of excuses: Bad offensive line play. Poor offensive scheme. Style-altering injuries. Coaches hampering his progress.

Many of these things are out of Tua’s control, and are factors that can mostly be blamed on the leadership and organization. But there is one notion or “myth” about Tagovailoa that he will have the ability to dispel in 2022.

Perhaps the biggest knock on Tua is his arm strength. There is an overwhelming belief that he struggles to throw the long ball, and that his inability to do so will ultimately contribute to his demise as the potential future quarterback of the Miami Dolphins.

Have we seen him throw deep passes? We have, despite them being dismissed as rebuttals to the arguments of the naysayers. There isn’t an abundance of evidence from his professional career that we can point to, but that could also be attributed to the game plan and play calling that forced him to throw primarily short passes and screens.

That should change during the upcoming season, as Tagovailoa himself has mentioned that there will be more opportunities for deep passes in the new offense. McDaniel and company will likely be giving him more of a green light than he was ever afforded under Brian Flores, and we could see it pay off in the form of big plays.

Just as with the rest of his opportunities for the 2022 season, they are up to Tua Tagovailoa himself to capitalize on.
