Miami Dolphins embarrassing moment #4: The Deshaun Watson Saga

Everything about the Deshaun Watson saga was an ugly stain on the Dolphins organization, and even more so for Brian Flores and his regime.

It is too early to determine whether the Cleveland Browns are going to have buyer’s remorse for forking out 230 million fully guaranteed dollars for the embattled quarterback, but things are not looking good during the early stages of the relationship. Watson’s legal troubles are far from being settled, and there are rumors that he could miss the entirety of the 2022 season due to the suspension stemming from them.

It could have been the Dolphins’ problem.

It was no secret that Miami flirted with the idea of acquiring Watson, and they were considered the heavy favorites to land him at multiple points. It was unclear whether it was Flores or the front office that had the interest, but the coach did nothing to dispel rumors when asked about them.

And it wasn’t just that the Dolphins were thinking about trading serious draft capital for a player with 22 (at the time) accusations of sexual misconduct, but in doing so, adversely affected the development of the quarterback they drafted in the top-5 less than two years prior. The rumors were constantly swirling around Tua Tagovailoa while he was trying to make his case for being the future face of the franchise, which undoubtedly affected his immediate progression.

With Flores gone, the franchise has publicly instilled confidence in Tagovailoa from the owner to the coaching staff, and Watson is someone else’s problem to deal with. And so is Flores, for that matter.
