Miami Dolphins embarrassing moment #5: The Endzone Screen

There are plenty of bad games on this list, but there is one particular play during the Brian Flores era that sticks out more than any other.

The beginning of the 2021 season went just about as poorly as it could have for the Miami Dolphins. They had mediocre expectations going into the year, but the team started out with a 1-7 record and were probably lucky just to have the 1.

But at one point, believe it or not, the Dolphins were 1-1 and held a 14-point lead in the third game of the season. And then “The Play” happened, and things went downhill from pretty much there on out.

With 36 seconds left in the first quarter of their Week 3 game with the Raiders, Miami lined up at their own 1-yard line after a Las Vegas punt pinned them deep. Their play call of choice may be one of the more baffling things I’ve ever seen on a football field. The play inexplicably called for both wide receivers to move a couple of feet back at the snap of the ball and wait for a screen pass.

A screen pass. At your own 1-yard line. With the intended receiver standing in his own end zone with no blockers in front of him.

Jacoby Brissett threw it anyway, and Jaylen Waddle stood no chance as he was tackled in the end zone for a safety as soon as his feet hit the ground. The Raiders would win 31-28 and the Dolphins’ season would continue to slip away from them.
