Miami Dolphins embarrassing moment #6: The Urban Meyer Game

Urban Meyer might go down as one of the worst professional coaches that we have seen in recent memory, but he had quite a moment against Brian Flores and the Miami Dolphins.

The Dolphins were off to a rough start in 2021, and they sported a 1-4 record as they made their way to London to play against the Jaguars in Week 6. Jacksonville hadn’t won a game all season under first-year head coach Urban Meyer and had lost an NFL record 20 games in a row dating back to the previous season. If Miami was going to get an easy win, it was going to be this one.

Here’s how it went down.

The Dolphins were up by 3 with just under seven minutes left in the 4th quarter. After a Jacksonville field goal tied the game, Miami made the tough decision to go for it on a 4th and 1 from their own 46-yard line. They failed, turning the ball back over to the Jaguars, who had 1:42 left to try and tie the game.

The Dolphins’ defense came up big, forcing Trevor Lawrence into two negative plays that put Jacksonville back across their side of the 50-yard line. A 12-yard gain on 3rd and 20 set up a 4th and 8 from the Miami 44-yard line with just five seconds remaining.

A field goal from this range was out of the question. It looked as though the game would go to overtime unless the Jaguars could pull off some kind of miracle Hail Mary play. The Dolphins responded by setting themselves up in a prevent defense, leaving the underneath part of the field wide open for the offense to operate.

Meyer saw an opportunity. Instead of trying for a big play, the Jaguars’ wide receivers ran slant patterns, and on a 4th and 8, Lawrence hit Laviska Shenault Jr. for a nine-yard gain. The Jaguars quickly called their final time out, and there was just one second left on the clock. Matthew Wright hit a 53-yard game-winning field goal, and Urban Meyer had outsmarted Brian Flores.

This felt like rock bottom.
