Tua Tagovailoa statistical prediction: sacked less than 23 times

Despite playing behind a historically bad offensive line during the 2021 season, Tua Tagovailoa was actually one of the least sacked quarterbacks in the league last year. He was taken down on just 4.9 percent of plays in which he dropped back to pass, a number lower than the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Kyler Murray, and Russell Wilson.

To be fair, Tagovailoa wasn’t Miami’s only starting quarterback last season. Jacoby Brissett spent a good amount of time under center for the Dolphins, and much of that time on his back. Brissett was sacked 19 times, one less than Tagovailoa, despite dropping back to pass nearly 150 times less.

If Miami’s revamped offensive line is able to give the quarterback more time and room to operate in 2022, then we could and should see Tagovailoa be back sacked less than 23 times in the 15 games that we’re predicting. Given all of the knocks on Tua and his statistical output, his ability to avoid the rush has been and will be key for the Dolphins.
