For the Miami Dolphins, everything starts inside with Michael Dieter and Connor Williams.

In his NFL career, Williams has never played center. He has been a very good NFL guard and in Dallas, he helped make the Cowboys line one of the best in the league. Williams has been surrounded by talent and this year, he will need to step up and take on a mentor’s role as well.

In the process of mentoring some of the younger guys, Williams will be fighting for his position and this may be the best competition on the entire roster. The winner very well could be the Miami Dolphins.

Williams’ switch to center means that Michael Dieter will not be handed the job and will have to compete for it. Why is that important? Dieter has been good but inconsistent. He has dealt with injuries and even when healthy, he hasn’t really had to earn his job. Like Williams, Dieter is a converted guard but he has more experience at center.

These two will battle in camp for the starting center role but Miami will benefit more, potentially, from Dieter beating out Williams. This will allow Williams to return to guard next to Terron Armstead giving Miami a formidable left side. If Dieter wins the center job, it would also mean that he has improved as well.
