Miami Dolphins QB prediction #1: Top 3 fewest sacks allowed

The offensive line for the Miami Dolphins during the 2021 season was historically bad. They had some of the lowest-graded linemen in the league starting for most of the year, and it proved to be one of the main culprits in the team’s lack of success early on.

But one of the pleasant surprises that stemmed from the awful play of the guys up front was Tua Tagovailoa’s ability to avoid sacks. The Dolphins finished in the middle of the pack in sacks allowed, tied for 13th most with 40 total. A good portion of those, however, came at the hands of Jacoby Brissett.

The Dolphins’ backup quarterback struggled when called upon last season, and he was one of the most oft-sacked pass throwers in the league. He was taken down on 7.8 percent of all of his drop backs, 8th worst among the 33 QBs who qualified. Compare that with Tagovailoa’s 4.9 percent, which ranked 8th best. Tua was sacked 20 times in 2021, Brissett 19. Though the latter had over 150 less pass attempts.

If Tagovailoa is able to use his pocket presence and footwork to elude pressure in 2022, especially with a revamped offensive line, then the Dolphins could finish near the top of the list when it comes to the fewest sacks allowed. In fact, if Tua starts in 15 or more contests, then Miami will finish in the top-3.
