Alec Ingold and John Lovett should see decent playing time for the Miami Dolphins and fans should be excited to see fullbacks return to the Dolphins offense.

Why you should be excited.

The Miami Dolphins haven’t had a pure fullback since Lousaka Polite in 2010. Many Dolphins fans love the bruising and battering rams that fullbacks bring to the field of play. In Mike McDaniel’s offense, fullbacks will be used to block, shift down to off-tackle, and of course short yardage situations as either a ball carrier or a bullish blocker in the gap.

What to watch: Short yardage usage and passing game

Who has the edge?

Alec Ingold has the starting job pretty much locked down but Lovett isn’t a bad FB. It is doubtful that the Dolphins keep two on the 53-man roster but there is always the practice squad and that is where I think he lands.

Stats:

  • Lovett – 8 games with Green Bay in 2020. Did not play in 2021.
  • Ingold – 3 years with the Raiders and has played in 41 games. He is a quality pass-catcher who has 239 yards on 28 receptions and three TDs. He has rushed the ball 15 times for 22 yards, no TDs but 10 first downs.

Uniform Numbers

  • Ingold – 30
  • Lovett – 46

Playing time prediction: Ingold should see fewer reps than Lovett who will get the bulk of the workload when Miami has FBs on the field.
