For the Miami Dolphins, depth at TE is better than the Patriots but how do they match up at the top of the unit?

Tight ends

  • Dolphins vs. Patriots
  • Edge: PUSH

This doesn’t come down to having the better TE, Mike Gesicki or Hunter Henry, it will come down to which team uses their TEs better.

Henry is an excellent TE but he wasn’t a standout last year. He caught 50 passes for 603 yards. Gesicki was the team’s 2nd best receiver last year, a knock on the Dolphins’ depth at that position. Gesicki posted 73 receptions for 780 yards.

Beyond the two starters, we learned that Jonnu Smith wasn’t as good as he was advertised last year when he joined the Patriots. He caught only 28 passes on the season. Still, he has a lot of talent if New England figures out how to get both he and Henry on the same page.

Miami’s depth at the position is also decent but Durham Smythe is the better of the group while Miami still tries to find out what they have in Hunter Henry.

For now, this is a push. While Gesicki is better than Henry, we can’t be sure that he will produce the same numbers as he transitions more into a traditional tight-end role.
