The Detroit Lions will have to keep the Miami Dolphins defense from disrupting the offensive game plan and that won’t be easy.

The Lions’ offense is capable of putting points on the board as we saw in our first slide. The problem is they lack consistency. Offensively, if the Lions are in sync, they can do damage but they have struggled against average defenses and fallen completely flat against top defensive units. The Dolphins’ defense is somewhere in the middle of that. They have the talent to be one of the best but the secondary injuries have been exhausting.

Lions running game

Jamaal Williams

  • 3 starts in 6 games
  • 4.5 yards per carry average
  • 411 yards rushing
  • 6 touchdowns
  • 6 receptions

Williams is the Lions’ top running back but he isn’t often involved in the Lions’ passing game. He runs hard and can be a problem for defenses but he disappears when the Lions fall behind leaving D’Andre Swift as the more capable pass-catching threat.

D’Andre Swift

  • 3 games/3 starts
  • 231 yards rushing
  • 8.6 yards per carry
  • 1 touchdown
  • 8 receptions on 12 targets
  • 77 yards receiving
  • 1 touchdown receiving

It may not seem much different than Williams but Swift has missed three games. He was a full participant at practice this week and should be good for the game on Sunday against Miami. He is a quick running back with good vision and physicality. Between Williams and Swift, the Dolphins defensive front will be tested.

Miami has played well against the run this year and have faced much better rushing attacks but this is part of the game that the Lions are trying to emphasize. Tough physical play in the trenches.
