Ironically, the Miami Dolphins, I think, need to utilize what Tua was doing last year.

This is not an endorsement of the trio of doofuses that were running the Dolphin’s offense last year. But, I think given how the Chargers played the Dolphins with the hunkering down in the middle and chucking Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle off the line, that throwing more quick hitters, underneath routes, and check downs need to be more in play.

Here are some numbers.

We love the aggressiveness. It’s fun having so many chunk plays. But, people are limiting it. Have to throw a few curve balls and take the easier, not as flashy, downright boring stuff. Like, I don’t think there’s a choice in the matter. Especially, with the weather going being as bad as it’s going to be, the only throws Tua may be able to make are short throws.

Remember back to last year with Patrick Mahomes. He got called out all year for not being disciplined enough to play the boring game of taking the underneath stuff, and having 8+ play drives because teams were taking away Tyreek Hill. They made it to the AFC title game so he eventually figured it out. Well, Tua majored in that last year.

That’s what Mike McDaniel has to figure out and instill in Tua’s brain. That progressing to the underneath/check-down player for maybe only 4-6 yards is the way to go right now.

Currently, Tua is such a rhythmic thrower. He doesn’t really throw to receivers. He throws to spots on the field where his receivers are supposed to be. That’s been working great for all the games up until the 49ers game and especially in the Chargers game.

In the Chargers game, the physicality they put on Hill and Waddle threw off the timing to where they weren’t in the spot Tua assumed they would be in when he got to his drop. That half-second of lateness makes him double clutch the ball and turn into a guy who looks like a fish out of water. It’s why he started running more. He may have to do that more often as well and I know we all cringe a bit when he does it but he may have to and that’s just the way it is.

I’d love to see more WR screens and throws to the backs out of the backfield as well. Nice easy throws that Tua can make so that he can get into a rhythm and it gets the ball into our best player’s hands.

Maybe more motion with the receivers so that DBs can’t get as much of a hand on them can also be used more.
