Miami Dolphins: Players with most to prove in final 3 games
Miami Dolphins players with something to prove
3. Xavien Howard
Xavien Howard spent so long being Miami’s best and most productive player that it almost seems ridiculous to think that he has to prove himself in any facet. But given his noticeable decline from being an elite cover cornerback, we will be looking for Howard to step up his performance over the final three weeks of the regular season.
Howard and the Dolphins have been through a lot together, for better or for worse. He progressively became one of the best cornerbacks in the league after being a second round pick, and his 10 interceptions in 2020 were good enough to rank him third in Defensive Player of the Year voting. With his success came his contract demands, which ruled the headlines during multiple training camps, but Miami eventually gave Howard the long-term pay day that he asked for.
But it isn’t looking like such a smart move, now. It seems as though it is weekly now that Howard is getting burned in coverage or missing an open field tackle. Not only is he no longer Miami’s best defensive player, he may not even be the best cornerback on the team anymore. Howard will have to step up in a big way for the rest of 2022.
