Miami Dolphins say Tua Tagovailoa in concussion protocol
By Brian Miller
Tua Tagovailoa has entered the concussion protocol according to Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. That could explain his 2nd half performance.
On Sunday, Tua took a hit that twisted his body around and appeared to land on the back of his head. He wasn’t evaluated or pulled from the game. A savvy Twitter user posted the video earlier today and questioned whether or not he may have had a concussion.
The play in question but unknown if it was the one that actually put him in the protocol now, happened just before the first half ended.
If Tua did experience head trauma, it could be a reason why his 2nd half was so off that also included three interceptions. It also brings into question whether or not he will play this weekend as well.
Regardless of when the concussion potentially happened, Tua is responsible for this unless he specifically told a trainer on the sideline about any potential head injury. Tua has to be responsible for his well-being when no one else knows what is going on.
Clearly, Tua was off in the 2nd half but at the same time, he hasn’t looked sharp for two of the last four games so really no one should have been surprised.
According to Warren Sharp via Twitter, here are his pre and post-concussion stats.
- pre-concussion: 9/12, 229 yds, 19.1 YPA, 1 TD, 0 INT
- post-concussion: 7/13, 81 yds, 6.2 YPA, 0 TD, 3 INTs
The degree of what concussion he may have or whether or not this is just precautionary isn’t known yet but at the same time, this could be the third concussion he has suffered this season but definitely his 2nd.
While most fans don’t want to have the conversation, at some point we have to start wondering about the durability of Tua and whether or not his head injuries are going to be a problem for him but more importantly in his quality of life after football.
