Josh Boyer is not Brian Flores and like Tua Tagovailoa, the Miami Dolphins didn’t set Mike McDaniel up for success.

It’s not easy to enter a season knowing that you will have to rely on a retained coach to run an entire defensive unit, or an offensive unit but in the case of McDaniel, that is exactly what happened.

Chris Grier did everything he could to keep the entire 2021 defensive unit in place and that included Josh Boyer. Many believed that Boyer didn’t really do much with the defense and that it was Brian Flores who ran it so well. That showed to be true this year with a defense comprised of almost the same players but with far less consistency, even when players were healthy.

Boyer’s issues are not secondary, it’s his scheming. His decisions have been questioned over and over again all season and he doesn’t put his team in a position to win at the point of impact. The Dolphins have given up big leads or have fought back from big deficits.

There have been good games for Miami’s defense and yes, there is enough blame to go on McDaniel and his offense that have up the defense in bad positions but overall, the play has to be better and this season, it wasn’t enough.
