Miami Dolphins Skylar Thompson’s biggest win was no mistakes
By Brian Miller
Skylar Thompson led the Miami Dolphins to their first playoff appearance since 2016 for the Miami Dolphins but he did it by playing smartly.
Thompson didn’t make any critical mistakes on Sunday. Sure, he threw some bad balls, gave up on some plays, and tended to run towards the sideline without seeing an opening upfield but let’s be real. Thompson wasn’t being asked to be gunslinger on Sunday. He was a game manager and as such, he managed the game very well.
Thompson finished the game with a 20/31 for 159 yard stat line. Nothing overly impressive. He didn’t have any touchdown passes but more importantly, he didn’t fumble the ball and he didn’t throw an interception.
While Miami’s offense didn’t move the ball well, they moved it well enough to give the defense time to rest. Miami’s defense attacked the Jets offense throughout the game.
When it came down to crunch time, Thompson pulled it out. Miami had only one three and out the entire game. Thompson engineered a 16 play drive and on the final drive drove 21 yards in just over 2:00 minutes to set up Jason Sanders for the go-ahead and winning touchdown.
Thompson did what was asked of him as the Dolphins relied on their running game to move the ball against a formidable Jets defensive front and he made the passes he needed to when he needed them.
Overall, Thompson’s day was not great but it was perfect for what Miami asked a 7th round draft pick to do. Win a game and get the team into the postseason. He delivered.
