4The Miami Dolphins, according to a report, are expecting Tua Tagovailoa to be back with the team as the starter in 2023. Don’t expect this to stop the “we need to add a QB talk”.

The report comes from ESPN via Adam Schefter who says sources with the team indicate they believe that Tua is their starter and that his development this year under Mike McDaniel is one of those reasons.

When healthy, Tua was one of the top QBs in the league and the top quarterback in several statistical categories. The problem, of course, is Tua struggled to stay healthy this year with two and potentially a third undiagnosed concussion. Regardless, he isn’t available to start the playoffs later today.

Aside from the concussions, Tua was injury free otherwise.

Miami will need to find another quarterback. For one, Teddy Bridgewater is a free agent to be, and Skylar Thompson, despite two starts is not ready for that role. If the Dolphins want to be contenders next season, they can not rely on Tua to 100% to play all 17 games. That is a simple reality. He needs to stay healthy and if he does, everyone wins.

Until he can do that, Miami needs a backup quarterback that is capable of stepping in and leading the team. Bridgwater should have been that guy, but he proved pretty quickly that he wasn’t.

The backup spot may be the most important addition this offseason but knowing that Tua will be back, that’s good news for the Dolphins.
