TIGHT ENDS
Mike Gesicki
Adam Shaheen
What the Dolphins decide to do with the tight end position this off-season is one of the bigger mysteries for the immediate future of the team. They’ve had mostly the same cast of characters for the last couple of years in Mike Gesicki, Adam Shaheen, and Durham Smythe. The former two are free agents now that the season is over, and it is likely that we have seen the last of both of them in Miami.
Smythe and Hunter Long will be the only remaining tight ends on the roster under contract, and it is very unlikely that they will be moving forward with just the two of them. The position will need to be addressed, and it could be a weak point going into 2023 considering how many other holes that the Dolphins have to fill on other units.
OFFENSIVE LINE
Eric Fisher
Greg Little
Brandon Shell
Geron Christian
Michael Deiter
It would have been great if we hadn’t heard from any of these guys during the 2022 season. But due to injuries to starters that caused the unit to be one massive turnstile, Miami had to dig far too deep down it’s depth chart for players to plug in. Most of the ones that they used will be free agents during the 2023 season.
The Dolphins will need some new depth. Armstead, Connor, and Hunt will still be around, but essentially their entire second unit will be hitting the open market. There won’t exactly be bidding wars for the likes of Greg Little or Brandon Shell, and there is a chance that they are brought back to Miami on affordable contracts.
DEFENSIVE LINE
Trey Flowers
John Jenkins
The defensive line was one of the stronger and more productive units on the roster during the 2022 season, thanks in large part to Christian Wilkins and Zach Sieler. They will both be in line for bigger pay days as they have outplayed their respective deals, but they will both be under contract for 2023. Raekwon Davis and Emmanuel Ogbah will be there as well. But Miami will have to replace some of the depth at the position if they lose the two players whose contracts are expiring.
Trey Flowers was brought in to help the Dolphins’ pass rush, but lasted just four games before sustaining a season ending injury. John Jenkins played in 22 percent of defensive snaps and was a solid enough rotational player, but he will be 34 years old next season and Miami may look to get some younger legs to relieve Wilkins and Sieler.
