Mike Gesicki is a volatile topic. Not in the Miami Dolphins realm of talking about Tua Tagovailoa, but the tight end is either loved or he isn’t.
Fans can say what they want but Mike Gesicki hasn’t held out, complained publicly, opted to not play, fake an injury, or anything else. He went out every game and did what Mike McDaniel asked him to. To the best of his ability.
Asked this year to be a blocker, the Dolphins paid him franchise tag money and Gesicki showed that blocking is not his best attribute. But McDaniel could have done better. With Jaylen Waddle, Tyreek Hill, and solid out-of-the-backfield running backs, Gesicki should have been a more featured outlet for Miami’s quarterbacks, and he wasn’t.
No, Gesicki didn’t fit into the system and the Dolphins should have let him hit the market last year but they opted to pay him. Now they will watch him leave.

The Dolphins are not going to apply the tag on Gesicki again and they won’t try and trade him because they would need the tag to do that. Their best hope is to get a 3rd round compensation pick for him after he leaves in free agency. And he will leave in free agency.
Gesicki is going to get a good contract from a TE-needy team that uses their TEs as receivers. On Sunday, we saw the last of Gesicki in Miami and that’s a shame because there was a lot more to his abilities than what we saw this year.
