Tua Tagovailoa is the Miami Dolphins QB says Grier and McDaniel
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins will head into the offseason making sure everyone knows that Tua Tagovailoa is the starting quarterback.
Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel met with the media today and both put their seal of approval on Tua Tagovailoa as the team’s quarterback and both expect him back at 100% next year.
Why is this important? For starters, Tua hasn’t had anyone, including Grier and Brian Flores, give any indication definitively of his status with the team. This year, despite missing games due to concussions, Miami believes that his future is here with the Dolphins.
Miami will need to make a decision on Tua’s 5th-year option but they have plenty of time to do so.
Regardless of what Grier and McDaniel say regarding Tua, there will be questions.
Sorry to say but this is not “definitive” and it won’t be until March rolls around and the Dolphins don’t pursue free-agent QBs that will challenge Tua’s existence as the starter. Tom Brady is one of those quarterbacks and like it or not, there will be plenty of speculation between now and then as it relates to the Dolphins.
Ross’ infatuation with Brady, through Bruce Beal, cost Miami money and draft picks. Would Ross pass on a former Michigan man, a quarterback who is unquestionably headed to the Hall of Fame, for a quarterback with lingering questions about durability? Remember, we are talking about Stephen Ross here.
I would like to think that would not be the case but stranger things have happened within the Dolphins organization.
If Miami skips through March without any moves and withstands the rumors, they still have to get through the lead-up to the draft in April and through the draft. Miami will again be talked about considerably as a team looking to make a bold trade for a quarterback and as long as Lamar Jackson is still out there, the Dolphins will be a team mentioned far too often.
I will apologize now for the articles that will discuss these rumors throughout the next few months but until there is an actual fire, I would take them as rumors and speculation, nothing more.
What happens next is Tua gets healthy. He has nothing more to do but hang out on a golf course until OTA’s and mini-camps begin sometime after the NFL season concludes.
Yes, Tua is going to be the Miami Dolphins quarterback in 2023, as of today. Will that change? I don’t think so but I do think the backup situation will change considerably, it has to and if 2023 sees Tua out of games with concussions, I would suspect that 2024 will be a lot less favorable for his future.
