Cethan Carter has been on this list for two years now but this year, I think the Miami Dolphins finally part ways.

Miami’s tight-end situation will change this year with Mike Gesicki departing and the Dolphins likely looking at free agency for a replacement. That leaves Miami with Durham Smythe, Hunter Long, Cethan Carter, and maybe the fact that is it, saves Carter through training camp.

I don’t see Carter making it out of camp though honestly. Carter spent this year on IR and his best attribute is blocking. While that is something that Mike McDaniel looks for and needs, I think he finds a better option in free agency.

Releasing Carter would save the Dolphins over $2 million in cap space with no dead money. I wouldn’t be surprised if Miami cleared him as healthy, released him, and maybe re-signed him later in the off-season or in camp for league minimum money.

Miami has to put a focus on the tight end job this off-season provided that is what Mike McDaniel is lacking. The attempt to put Gesicki in line as a blocker didn’t work out well and it was a $10 million mistake by Miami. Gesicki was always better suited for receptions. Carter? Not really a pass catcher and isn’t an elite blocker. So, this is a position in need of a big upgrade.
