Miami Dolphins: Most embarrassing moments of 2022 season

4. End of first Jets game

Contrary to what the final score was, the contest between the Dolphins and the Jets in Week 5 was actually pretty competitive. Miami was doomed from the start when Teddy Bridgewater was taken out of the game on the first play and replaced by Skylar Thompson, who had set to take a snap in a regular season NFL game.

But Miami was able to rally from an early 12-point deficit, and trailed 19-14 at halftime. A field goal in the third quarter closed New York’s lead to just 2 points, but then disaster struck for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins began the 4th quarter with a drive that stalled at the Jets 36-yard line, and they opted to have Jason Sanders try a 54-yard field goal that would give them the lead. The kick was wide right, and the score remained 19-17. But not for long. The flood gates opened for the Jets, as they scored on the ensuing possession to make it a two score game. The Dolphins got the ball back, committed a delay of game on first down, and then fumbled the ball away on 1st and 15 at their own 20-yard line. New York scored another touchdown, pushing what was a 2-point lead into a 16-point lead in less than a minute of game play.

It got even worse. A turnover on downs for Miami followed by a third 4th quarter touchdown by the Jets turned the scoreboard into a 40-17 debacle, when the Dolphins were a missed field goal away from taking the lead early in the 4th quarter.
