Miami Dolphins: 5 numbers that defined the 2022 season

The number of first round picks that the Dolphins gave up/lost

The Dolphins entered training camp not with not only high hopes for the season, but also a boat load of ammunition for the draft that would follow the 2022 campaign. But through a training camp lawsuit and a mid-season trade, Miami is left pick-less in the first round of the 2023 selection process.

It was supposed to be the Tua Tagovailoa backup plan. If the quarterback didn’t pan out like the team hoped he would, they could use the picks to replace him. If he was the QB of the future, then they could add to the surrounding arsenal.

But the NFL stripped Miami of their first round selection because of the Brian Flores saga, and traded away the rights to San Francisco’s first rounder in exchange for Bradley Chubb. In hindsight, the front office did use some of the ammo to bolster their roster by adding a pass rusher (a transaction that the jury is still out on), but Tua’s short and long term health with have to be counted on for at least the upcoming year.

As it stands today, the Dolphins will have a second rounder and two thirds in the first two days of the draft. They lost the 21st overall pick via the lawsuit, and the 49ers pick will likely fall in the 29-32 range. Miami won’t make a selection until after the 50th pick.
