Miami Dolphins fans love Jerome Baker and they should but there are questions about his future with the team.

Many believe that Baker could be traded with Vic Fangio coming to Miami. Many do not see Baker as a good fit in his defensive scheme. Add into the equation his contract and maybe there is a little flame to the smoke.

Baker will account for $12.7 million in cap space this year. Releasing him would save $4 million and the team would eat $8 million. Trading him would help if the team could find a trade partner.

Overall, Baker’s contract hasn’t been bad and his production has been good but not exactly elite. Miami fans haven’t complained and they shouldn’t. It was a good contract for a good player but the Dolphins need to look longer term and there doesn’t appear to be a long future in Miami for Baker.

One option could be a restructure that reduces the cap hit, frees up a lot more money, and thus extends Baker’s contract for a couple of years. This would be smart should Fangio look at Baker as a piece that works in his defensive scheme and I don’t think too many fans would be all that upset.
