If there was an honest bright spot in the Miami Dolphins offense, it had to be the wide receivers who took the league by storm.

Mike McDaniel had to be a kid in a candy shop with a big bag. His offensive expertise was running the football but Miami’s wide receiver group gave him no other options but to change that, maybe a little too much.

The addition of Tyreek Hill proved to be a major success as he led the league in receiving yards almost the entire season (until Tua Tagovailoa got hurt). His pairing with Jaylen Waddle proved almost unstoppable.

Free agency for the Dolphins looked like a win from the start. The Dolphins added Cedrick Wilson, Jr., River Cracraft, and Trent Sherfield. They drafted Erik Ezukanma who lit up the preseason. Everything looked like it was going to be a banner year for the Dolphins’ offense.

There is no question that the strength of the Miami offense was the wide receiver group. Hill and Waddle were phenomenal and formed a base for the 2023 season but it wasn’t all perfect.

Cedrick Wilson barely made an impact as a receiver and he was outplayed at the position by Trent Sherfield. It wasn’t close. Sherfield and Cracraft were long shots to make the roster. They both played big roles in Miami’s offense, Sherfield played well enough that Miami should get him a new deal and keep him in the system. Both he and Cracraft will be free agents.

Next. Disappointing season for the TEs. dark

Wilson was a disappointment but he isn’t alone. Ezukanma never saw the field until the final week of the season. Inactive almost the entire year. The rookie couldn’t get on the field and we simply don’t know what his development will lead to in the future.

It’s hard to put a WR unit of this caliber on ice but McDaniel relied far too much on them for success and while the Dolphins had issues with blocking and the running game, Miami tended to abandon the rushing attack when it was working. McDaniel saw glitzy stars with Hill and Waddle and that was a contributing factor in the run game.

Overall, the Dolphins’ WR unit is one of the best in the NFL and aside from bringing back Sherfield and Cracraft, there isn’t anything they really need to do ahead of the 2023 season. The unit was a glowing “A+”.
