A Miami Dolphins fan’s favorite Tom Brady memories
Arturo Freeman’s pick to seal the 2004 Monday night upset would not be the only time that the Dolphins intercepted a late Brady pass to seal a win. The other two occasions also came in South Florida and also came in December.
On Dec. 6, 2009, it was Channing Crowder who sealed the deal for Miami. Down 14-0 early, Dan Carpenter’s 41-yard field goal with 1:02 left had given the Dolphins their first lead.
The Dolphins led 22-21 when Brady felt pressure. With Cameron Wake draped around his ankles, Brady again heaved one up for grabs. Crowder was there to secure the pick and the Miami win.
Brady finished with 352 yards in the loss and was intercepted twice. Miami’s Chad Henne passed for 335 yards and two scores of his own.
The Dolphins improved to 6-6 with the win. After beating the Jacksonville Jaguars the following week, Miami closed the year on a 3-game winning streak.
On Dec. 15, 2013, it was Michael Thomas who sealed the deal for the Dolphins with a fourth-down interception of Brady in the end zone to preserve a 24-20 win. Miami had trailed 10-0 in that one before Ryan Tannehill’s third touchdown pass of the day — a 14-yard connection to Marcus Thigpen — gave the Dolphins their first lead with 1:15 to play.
Brady had misfired on three straight throws before his bullet over the middle was picked off by Thomas with seven seconds left. The win provided real hope as the Dolphins moved to 8-6 for the year. Unfortunately, Miami would lose its final two games to finish 8-8 and miss the playoffs. New England would reach the AFC Championship before falling to the Denver Broncos.
