A Miami Dolphins fan’s favorite Tom Brady memories
The Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots couldn’t have come into 2019 with more different expectations. The Patriots were the reigning Super Bowl champions and looking to repeat. Miami was in rebuilding mode with a first-year head coach named Brian Flores.
When the teams met early in the season in South Florida, New England rolled to a 43-0 victory. After an 0-7 start, the Dolphins had found their footing, going 4-4 over the next eight games. To clinch a first-round bye in the playoffs, all that New England had to do was beat the lowly Dolphins in Foxborough in the regular-season finale.
Instead, on Dec. 29, 2019, they got a determined, young Miami team. A Brady interception returned for a touchdown by Eric Rowe gave the Dolphins a 10-0 lead. New England didn’t pull in front until Brady found James White for a 13-yard touchdown with less than four minutes to play.
Trailing 24-20, Ryan Fitzpatrick marched the Dolphins 75 yards on the decisive drive. With 29 seconds left, Fitzpatrick’s 9-yard touchdown strike to Mike Gesicki served as the game-winner as Miami stunned New England, 27-24.
The loss would cost New England a first-round bye. A week later, the Patriots were defeated by the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Wild Card Game.
Brady would sign with Tampa Bay in the offseason. His final regular-season game as a member of the Patriots was an epic road upset by a Dolphins team they had defeated by 43 points earlier in the season.
