Miami Dolphins fans can’t assume that the hiring of Vic Fangio is going to make everything perfect. He is, however, an upgrade. And a big one.

Fangio will be the first Dolphins coordinator with previous NFL experience at the position since Mike Nolan was with the team under Nick Saban. He has more experience at DC than any other NFL coach in the league.

Fangio will bring a new focus and a new design to a defense that has a lot of talent. Consider that Miami, without Tua, almost beat the Bills in the playoffs. Miami’s defense was near perfect in that game but they were not and Boyer’s affinity for the Cover-Zero didn’t help when Miami needed it the most (nor did McDaniel’s time management skills).

What will be intriguing is who joins Fangio in Miami. Will he retain the remaining coaching staff and just fill in the holes? Fangio is expected to sign his three-year contract sometime this week. It has been reported that he would do so after the Super Bowl.

It will also be interesting to see what kind of changes he wants to make with player personnel as well. How Miami targets free agency could also be influenced by Fangio and what he feels is needed to make the defensive unit a top one in the NFL.

If Fangio can make the defense better as many expect, the Dolphins will make a bigger push and some of those close games that Miami lost as a result of Boyer’s defensive calls (Chargers game) then maybe those games turn into victories. Miami’s defense is good and Fangio could make them great.
