Miami Dolphins free agency should be RB influenced

Is there a bigger need on the Miami Dolphins roster than running back? It should be a premium focus for the team heading into free agency this year.

March 15th will officially start the league’s new year and the Dolphins should be ready to roll by the time the three-day tampering window opens. Miami should be active in the market, especially for a running back but they will also likely address the position before the market hits that three-day period.

We mentioned that tight end was a big issue for the Dolphins heading into the off-season but RB is worse.

Miami will enter the 2023 off-season with no running backs under contract. That’s right. All of the RB’s contracts are ending in March.

  • Salvon Ahmed
  • Raheem Mostert
  • Jeff Wilson, Jr.
  • Myles Gaskin

We have over the last couple of months talking about the increasing likelihood of Mostert and Wilson returning. Of the two, I would guess that Wilson will be a top priority given the fact Miami traded draft capital for him.

Gaskin spent almost his entire year on the inactive list and there is little reason to believe he would be re-signed or would even consider coming back at all. Ahmed is a possibility to provide depth but if the Dolphins hit the market looking to get better, that depth could be Mostert and Wilson.

Miami fans should not expect the Dolphins to target big names. They simply don’t have the money to lure them in. The draft is a possibility but if the Dolphins don’t hit the market knowing that the position is a need, they could lose out on landing a 2nd round running back that they like.

Miami is not in a good position as it relates to the running back unit. Forget that they are all free agents, Miami lacks the cap space when compared to other needs on the team and that could be problematic for Mike Mcdaniel to find the runners he wants to open his offense more.

Chances are, the Dolphins bring back Wilson and Mostert and sign a couple of 3rd and 4th-tier running backs to provide depth, and knowing Chris Grier, they will probably add a 7th-round draft pick to the unit as well.
