3 Miami Dolphins that don’t deserve a 2023 with the team
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins fired Matt Applebaum after the season and replaced the offensive line coach with Butch Barry but what about Danny Crossman?
Crossman has been the Special Teams Coordinator since joining the team in 2019 with Brian Flores. While I don’t think the Dolphins should fire him because of his Flores connection, the Dolphins special teams are, well, not special.
Miami’s STs need to be revamped. They are one of the worst in the league.
Miami ranked 30th in punt returns in 2022 and they have struggled to find a return guy that can consistently return kicks and punts. This has been an ongoing problem for the Dolphins. Miami also ranks 23rd in punt yards allowed to opposing teams.
Miami ranks better in kick coverage coming in 10th against opposing teams and 15th overall in their own return yards.
The problem is that Miami’s special teams’ units are not getting better. Miami should have ranked much higher in stopping opposing punt returns considering Thomas Morstead was stellar this past season in putting the ball inside the 20. Miami ranked 9th overall in punt net average and that is because of Morstead.
Crossman hasn’t turned the special teams unit around and has had four years to do so. Miami has dropped overall consistently from year to year and if Crossman sticks around this year, the Dolphins need to get better against in all aspects of the return game whether it be punt or kick-off.
We won’t hold him responsible for the up and down inconsistency with Jason Sanders though.
