Miami Dolphins defensive line isn’t a free agent need
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins free agency in 2023 shouldn’t include the need for a defensive lineman. In fact, Miami should be trying to extend their own.
Miami hit it out of the park when they drafted Christian Wilkins but Wilkins is playing on his 5th-year option and the Dolphins would be smart to avoid having to tag him ahead of the 2024 season. Signing him now would save the team cap space and avoid having to overpay him a year later.
Wilkins isn’t Miami’s only problem. They also need to make a decision after the 2023 season on Zach Sieler and Raekwon Davis as well. All three players will hit free agency, potentially, in 2024 and that is not good.
The Dolphins can afford to lose one of those players, Davis in my opinion. Re-signing both Sieler and Wilkins should be the priority.
This year, there is little need to move any of the three unless someone proffers a trade that Grier can’t turn down. Davis is a possibility since he is the third player in the rotation and could be of interest to the Brian Flores led Viking defense.
The core, however, should remain Sieler and Wilkins.
Miami will have needs to address in free agency and barring a trade of one of these three, there is no need to look into the market to add anyone. The Dolphins are set here and all three should do fine if not better under Vic Fangio.
For now, Miami’s needs remain elsewhere but getting at least one of Wilkins or Sieler extended this year would make a lot of sense.
