Austin Jackson returning is good for the Miami Dolphins but he comes with a big “IF” as well.

Jackson started the season and looked like he was making the right strides to finally showing signs of life as a legit offensive tackle. Then he was injured and missed games only to return and go right back on IR.

Miami’s right tackle turnstyle was not pretty last year and while Brandon Shell filled in well enough on the right side, the left side was often a mess when Terron Armstead was out. Getting Jackson back may not be what fans want to hear but the truth is Chris Grier is not moving on from him this year.

Jackson has one more year to prove his worth to the team because the Dolphins are not going to pick up his 5th year option for 2024. This means if Jackson wants an extension, he is going to have prove he can stay healthy and earn it.

Other notables:

Trey Flowers – Flowers was signed as a free agent to help with depth but didn’t last long before going on IR himself. He is a free agent and not likely to re-sign but if he does, he could add some depth to the LB group.

Cethan Carter – I’m not a big fan of the money that Miami has paid to Carter mainly because he hasn’t been healthy. Last year he missed all but one game and took only 2% of the snap counts in his two games. In his first season with Miami, 2021, Carter started one game and was credited with 16 games but only took 5% of the offensive snaps. His value came on special teams.

Adam Shaheen – Set to become a free agent, Shaheen was shipped off to the Texans in a trade that was nixed by Houston when he failed his physical. He was placed on IR and missed the rest of the season. Will he be re-signed by Miami? Maybe, he won’t be expensive and the Dolphins are going to be thin at the position, then again, there was a reason he was being traded in the first place.
