Linebacker has been a problem for the Miami Dolphins for a long time. Is this the year they go big?

Dolphins fans remember the attempts by Jeff Ireland to fix the linebacker unit when he signed guys like Dannelle Ellerbe. That didn’t quite work out because they didn’t fit the system. This year could be a lot different if the Dolphins make a big move defensively at the position.

Tremaine Edmunds

It would be fitting to bring back Edmunds and it would become another rarity that a father-son duo plays for the same team (at different times of course). Edmunds is the son of former TE Ferrell Edmunds and taking him from the Bills would be a very good move by Miami.

Edmunds is what the Dolphins need in a linebacker. He has good speed and great vision off the snap. He is reactive and instinctive and can be a game-changer making plays all over the field.

He improved considerably last season and that should be a good sign of what is to come. Under Vic Fangio, he could become a perennial Pro Bowl player at his position.

Edmunds’ next contract should take him into the apex of his career so the team that signs him will get top play from the linebacker long before his game begins to trend down with age.

This is the first time Edmunds will hit free agency and he has made it clear that he intends to test the free agent waters in March.
