Miami Dolphins biggest free agent roster needs of 2023
By Brian Miller
If the Miami Dolphins needed a running back, then that is because they didn’t do their jobs and get them locked down. Cornerback, however, is a bit different.
The Dolphins’ secondary was decimated by injuries last year and the cornerback was especially hard hit. The Dolphins did not have Byron Jones who likely will not return. They lost up-and-comer Trill Williams and Nik Needham before the season really got started.
Miami played several weeks with an injured Xavien Howard and some games completely without him. Miami relied on street-free agents and guys like undrafted rookie Kader Kohou to fill the void.
This year, Miami will need to replace Jones with a starting-caliber corner. They will need to decide on Needham and several others and this may prove too much for just free agency. Miami is likely to jump into the draft looking for more help as well.
Corner is the biggest off-season need for the Dolphins because they didn’t create this. Running back, yes, but corner, no. The absence of Jones last year and the notion that he will not return this year is especially worrisome. Add into that the fact that Howard was off his game last year as well (injuries played a part) and you see Miami didn’t have a game plan in place for the long haul…now they need one.
